Kim Min-seok Criticizes Kim Moon-soo as “Candidate of Far-Right Coalition” in Pre-Election Briefing
SEOUL — On Thursday(KST), Democratic Party of Korea (더불어민주당) co-chair Kim Min-seok framed the presidential election between Lee Jae-myung (이재명) and Kim Moon-soo (김문수) as a battle between a “people’s candidate” and a “far-right coalition backed by Yoon Suk Yeol (윤석열) and Jeon Gwang-hoon (전광훈).” Speaking at a press briefing, Kim argued that Kim Moon-soo owes his candidacy to far-right forces and remains inherently tied to them.
As public opinion polls narrow, Kim forecast that the margin between Lee and Kim will continue to shrink due to stable party affiliations despite wide differences in individual competency. He urged the pro-democracy camp to stay alert and consolidate in preparation for a close and intense race.

He compared the moment to the collaboration among Kim Dae-jung, Kim Jong-pil, and Park Tae-joon during the IMF crisis, suggesting that Lee could similarly lead the country through its current internal strife and economic challenges.
Kim emphasized that Park Tae-joon symbolized cooperation between forces of industrialization and the pro-democracy movement, and praised Lee’s actions as demonstrating a patriotic commitment that rises above ideological boundaries. At the Democratic Party’s 109th Supreme Council meeting on April 25, Supreme Council Member Kim Min-seok sharply criticized the nation’s deteriorating economic indicators, holding Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok accountable.
Labeling them as the “minus growth economic team,” Kim blamed their leadership for worsening the economic crisis.
He cited the Bank of Korea’s report of a –0.2% GDP growth in the first quarter, compounded by the IMF’s downward revision of Korea’s annual growth forecast from 2.0% to 1.0%, calling it a “second economic shock.”
Kim emphasized that Korea experienced the steepest downgrade among major economies and pointed out that the IMF’s country chief had factored in political turmoil. “Han and Choi exacerbated the economic burden by interfering with the Constitutional Court,” he said, further criticizing the prolonged period of minimal growth and branding their performance as historically poor.
Regarding the government’s proposed supplementary budget, Kim argued it was merely a smokescreen to justify rushed tariff negotiations with the United States, and said its scale was too small to meaningfully impact the economy.
He concluded by urging Han to step down if he intends to pursue a presidential bid. “Han’s obsession with the presidency is turning into a national liability,” Kim asserted, warning that continuing down this path would only lead to political embarrassment.
The Democratic Party pledged to thoroughly scrutinize the government’s fiscal plans and focus its efforts on restoring growth through responsible alternatives.

National Assembly — South Korea’s opposition Democratic Party (DP) intensified its criticism of Acting President Han Duck-soo on Tuesday, accusing him of leveraging trade negotiations with the United States to bolster his rumored presidential ambitions.
At a meeting of the DP’s Supreme Council held in the National Assembly, senior party official Kim Min-seok argued that Han was pressuring government negotiators to prematurely conclude trade talks with Washington in an attempt to frame them as personal political achievements.
“Despite clear remarks from Vice Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok and Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun that these negotiations are in a preliminary stage and should be finalized by the next administration, Acting President Han is pushing for a hasty agreement,” Kim said. “This is an irresponsible move, driven not by the national interest but by a desire to stage-manage a campaign platform.”
Kim characterized Han’s actions as an effort to “privatize state affairs,” using sensitive bilateral talks as a springboard for his own political agenda. “History has shown us that high-ranking bureaucrats who enter the race midstream rarely make it to the end,” he added, suggesting Han’s maneuvering would ultimately prove futile.
Calling for restraint, Kim urged the government to approach the talks as groundwork for the incoming administration rather than seek quick political wins under an interim leadership. “This is an acting government,” he said. “It must not commit the country to deals that could have long-term consequences without full democratic legitimacy.”
Kim also called attention to ongoing criticism of People Power Party (PPP) floor leader Kweon Seong-dong, demanding a public apology over an alleged incident involving a female reporter. “I will be asking every day until he apologizes,” Kim said, adding that the National Assembly must hold itself to higher ethical standards.
