28일 국회 예산결산특별위원회 전체회의에서 진행된 관세 협상 관련 논의에서, 한국 정부와 미국 측 간의 초기 협의가 긍정적으로 평가되고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

최상목 경제부총리는 신동욱 국민의힘 의원의 질의에 답하면서 "스캇 베센트(Scot Bessent) 미국 상무장관이 메시지를 신중히 내고 있으며 조기에 협의가 시작된 점을 좋게 보고 있다"고 밝혔다. 또한 그는 "유예기간 동안 협의를 서둘러 진행하는 것이 국익 극대화에 도움이 될 것"이라고 강조했다.

최 부총리는 이어 협상의 진전으로 인해 불확실성이 해소되고 과제가 명확해졌다고 설명했다. 특히 정치 일정과 국회와의 협력 사항을 설명해 미국 측의 이해도 높아졌다고 전했다. 그는 "국익을 최우선으로 삼아 협상을 진행하겠다"고 덧붙였다.

야권 일각에서 제기된 ‘매국 협상’ 비판에 대해 최 부총리는 "걱정하는 목소리로 이해하며, 국회에 충분히 설명드렸고 앞으로도 계속 설명해 나가겠다"고 말했다. 또한, 오는 6월 3일 예정된 대통령 선거에 앞서 서둘러 진행하는 것이 아니냐는 비판에 대해서는 "질서 있는 협의를 통해 상호 이해폭을 넓히는 것이 국익에 부합한다"고 언급했다.

같은 자리에서 안덕근 산업통상자원부 장관도 미국 측 반응에 대해 긍정적인 평가를 전했다. 안 장관은 "7월 패키지 합의안에 한국의 이익을 반영할 수 있도록 노력하고 있으며, 특히 우려가 컸던 자동차 산업계 신뢰 회복에 주력할 것"이라고 밝혔다.

한편, 한국 경제가 중국에 대한 높은 의존도를 보이는 가운데, 신동욱 의원은 이에 대한 정부 대응책을 물었다. 안덕근 장관은 "중국과의 산업 안정화를 위해 꾸준히 노력하고 있으며, 특정 국가를 겨냥한 수출 통제 조치는 신중히 접근하고 있다"고 답변했다.

Seoul — At a full session of South Korea’s National Assembly Special Committee on Budget and Accounts held on Monday, key government officials highlighted the early progress of tariff negotiations with the United States, noting that the talks were being received favorably. Choi emphasized that beginning talks swiftly was crucial to maximizing South Korea’s national interests during the grace period. He added that ongoing consultations had reduced uncertainties and clarified the tasks ahead, while also broadening the U.S. side's understanding of South Korea’s political schedule and the necessity of legislative cooperation.

In response to concerns from the opposition, which labeled the negotiations as "traitorous," Choi reassured lawmakers that thorough explanations had been provided and would continue. He stressed that the government’s priority was securing outcomes that serve the nation’s best interests.

Choi asserted that an orderly approach to negotiations, with broader mutual understanding, would benefit national interests.

Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun echoed the positive sentiment, stating that American officials had expressed goodwill towards South Korea's efforts. Ahn noted that the government aimed to incorporate the nation's priorities into the "July package," particularly addressing the concerns of the automotive sector and rebuilding trust.

Addressing South Korea’s heavy economic dependence on China, Ahn explained that the government was striving to stabilize industrial relations with China, taking a cautious stance on export controls targeting specific countries.
